factors such as pregnancy, nursing, and force of gravity can lead to loss
of skin elasticity, causing the breasts to sag. Breast lift or mastopexy is
a procedure designed to raise and reshape sagging breasts. Candidates for
mastopexy are women who are healthy and emotionally stable who are looking
to improve the appearance of their breasts and are realistic about their
goals. Although the procedure can be performed on any women with sagging
breasts, the best candidates tend to be women with small, sagging breasts.
Mastopexy can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. If your breasts are sagging and have loss of volume as well (for example, after pregnancy), then breast implants inserted in conjunction with mastopexy can restore both the breast shape and size. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. After surgery, a compression bandage or surgical bra will be placed over your breasts. The sutures are removed in one week and you are able to shower in two days. Although you will be able to move around in a day, you should avoid lifting heavy objects for a few weeks and don’t plan to return to work for about a week. |
