Suction-assisted lipectomy is performed under general or local anesthesia. A narrow tube (cannula) is inserted into a small incision made in an inconspicuous place. Dr. Bui then manipulates the cannula that is connected to a strong vacuum, to break up the fat and remove it. For more fibrous body areas, such as the back or flanks, and for removing larger volumes of fat in a single procedure, ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty, commonly known as "UAL", is recommended. UAL uses sound waves to "liquefy" unwanted fat. It is not a substitute for traditional liposuction but is often used together to achieve the desired result.
