Abdominoplasty is for women who desire a firmer, flatter, and smoother abdomen. The procedure removes excess fat and skin from the abdomen and can tighten the abdominal muscles. A good candidate for this procedure is someone who has excess or sagging abdominal skin or an abdominal protrusion that is out of proportion to the rest of the body. The surgery is also particularly helpful to women who, because of pregnancy or previous obesity, have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin beyond the point where they can return to normal.
The surgery is done under general anesthesia with a horizontal incision placed just about the pubic area and extending outward to the hipbones, your anatomy, and your surgical goals. The length of the incision will depend on the amount of skin to be removed. If loose skin is present above the navel, then an additional incision around the navel will be necessary. For women who have only excess skin below the navel, a "mini" abdominoplasty could be offered. Dr. Bui will discuss these options with you in more detail.

Following surgery, you will feel tight and may not be able to stand straight for a few days. However, you are encouraged to get out of bed as much as possible and to ambulate in the house. The healing time is different for everyone, but in general, most patients can return to work in one to two weeks and can resume exercising in one month.
